Mountain lions are an elusive species and will often avoid direct contact with humans. In addition, mountain lions are experts when it comes to camouflage and know how to stay hidden when you approach them on foot. The mountain lion is often territorial and for a male, their territory is often around 300 square miles. For females, it is often between 80 and 100 square miles. The mountain lion is known for stalking and ambushing their prey so they can often travel up to 20 miles in a day. Dusk to dawn is the most active time for mountain lions and they prefer areas with a lot of brush.

About 70 percent of a mountain lions diet consists of deer. This means that when you go out to hunt and find a large heard of deer there is a good chance you will find a mountain lion hiding somewhere nearby. The average adult male will be over 8 feet long and weigh about 150 pounds. For the female, they will typically be about 7 feet long and weigh about 90 pounds.
