Idaho Elk

elk huntsThe elk is the largest deer species in the world and is one of the largest mammals you will find in North America. Only the moose is larger than the elk in the deer family. Idaho elk will range in habitats from forest to forest-edge often feeding on grasses, plants, leaves and bark.

The male elk will have large antlers that are shed once a year. During the rut, males will participate in ritualized mating behaviors which include posturing, antler wrestling and bugling – a loud series of screams that establishes dominance and attracts females. If you hear an elk bugle call you are hearing one of the most distinctive calls in the natural world.

Despite their resilience, elk are actually susceptible to a large number of infectious diseases. Some of these diseases can be transmitted to livestock. While some have attempted to reduce the incidence of disease through vaccination there hasn’t been much success.

Lastly, elk has been viewed as a spiritual force in some cultures. In Asia, the antlers and their velvet have been used in many forms of traditional medicine. In North America, the elk is typically hunted as a game species. Elk meat is often leaner than other meats and contains more protein than beef or chicken.

When you hunt elk, it is important to take the time to understand the animal. This way you can better understand their environment and how they live. As a result, you will have an easier time hunting your elk and getting results.
