Spring Bear Hunting

spring bear huntingIn North America, the most common bear species is the black bear. The largest black bears are typically hunted between late May through most of June since this is the main breeding season. Often a heavily forested area near an agricultural land will have the largest density of black bears. You can also find black bears near large wheat crops such as oats.

There are five main methods to use when hunting black bear. The method you choose to use will be determined by Idaho State hunting laws and you preference.

Most hunters in North America tend to use baiting which uses scents to attract a bear. Often a hunter will watch the bait from a nearby stand with a rifle, bow or shotgun. However, be sure to check Idaho state regulations since many US states are starting to ban baiting as a legal form of bear hunting.

Another popular option in the United States is calling. However, black bears are known to have short attention spans and will stop following a sound the moment it stops. Therefore, you will often need two individuals to keep up a continuous call. Remember that bears can hear for miles and it will take them awhile to respond to a call.

In other countries, a popular method of black bear hunting is snaring. This is the process of using a trap that will immobilize the animal. Another method of bear hunting used in other countries but not that popular in the United States is the use of hunting dogs.
